DVD: Pete Seeger - The Power of Song
$25.00
DVD-PSPS
Directed by Jim Brown • 2008 • 93 minutes
• "A stirring, revelatory film." – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
This is a great film about a living legend and a personal friend of ours. Dirctor Jim Brown documents the life of one of the greatest American singer/songwriters of the last century. Pete Seeger was the architect of the folk music revival , writing some of its best known songs including "If I Had A Hammer," "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?," "Turn, Turn, Turn." Largely misunderstood and criticized for his strong beliefs in social justice, he was picketed, protested, blacklisted, and in spite of his enormous popularity, banned from commercial televison for over 17 years. This was at a time when there was no alternative to commercial TV, no cable channels, no local cable community channels, no satellite TV, no internet. Only the big three networks: ABC, CBS and NBC and a very few educational channels in a handful of cities (pre-PBS). Musicians including Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Natalie Maines and Peter, Paul & Mary appear in this intimate portrait and discuss Seeger's lasting influence on the fabric of American music.

We Just Want to Live Here: A Palestinian Teenager, an Israeli Teenager" an Unlikely Friendship
$11.95
Book: We just want to live here
by Amal Rifai
Palestinian Amal Rifa'i and Israeli Odelia Ainbinder are two teenage girls who live in the same city, yet worlds apart. They met on a student exchange program to Switzerland. Weeks after they returned, the latest, violent Intifada broke out in the fall of 2000.
But two years later, Middle East correspondent Sylke Tempel encouraged Amal and Odelia to develop their friendship by facilitating an exchange of their deepest feelings through letters. In their letters, Amal and Odelia discuss the Intifada, their families, traditions, suicide bombers, and military service. They write frankly of their anger, frustrations, and fear, but also of their hopes and dreams for a brighter future.
Together, Amal and Odelia give us a renewed sense of hope for peace in the Middle East.

BK-HH
by Kathleen Krull. Illustrated by Yuyi Morales. Hardcover.
Cesar Chavez is known as one of America's greatest civil rights leaders. Cesar knew things had to change, and he thought that--maybe--he could help change them. So he took charge. He spoke up. And an entire country listened.

BK-H
Hardcover • 2009 • by John Perkins (author: Confessions of an Economic Hitman)
John Perkins has seen the signs of today's economic meltdown before. The subprime mortgage fiascos, the banking industry collapse, the rising tide of unemployment, the shuttering of small businesses across the landscape are all too familiar symptoms of a far greater disease. In his former life as an economic hit man, he was on the front lines both as an observer and a perpetrator of events, once confined only to the third world, that have now sent the United States—and in fact the entire planet—spiraling toward disaster.
